Bio
Keani Young is an American painter and ceramicist based in Northern California.
Statement
My oil paintings and drawings focus on figurative realism with impressionistic techniques. Accuracy of the human form, subtle shifts in color, and value contrasts are central to my work. Alongside painting, I create functional ceramics that emphasize form, symmetry, and simple color palettes that highlight the organic qualities of the vessel.
My stepfather, a highly accomplished figurative painter, has had a profound influence on my development as an artist, particularly in shaping my relationship with light and my admiration for the work of John Singer Sargent. Value, subtle color shifts, and the contrast between refined and expressive brushstrokes play important roles in my paintings. I am also influenced by Hayao Miyazaki, whose sincere approach to imagery and compelling narratives inspire me every day.
In ceramics, I am often inspired by lidded vessels, the use of texture, and unique silhouettes. I am also drawn to the idea of being part of a community that brings beauty into everyday life through functional objects. By creating ceramics meant for regular use, I hope to make pieces that spark joy and make the world, in small ways, a little more beautiful.
